It is not every day that a wine sets the buyer's nostrils a-quivering the way that this Furmint did when we first came across it last year. Not only an absolutely smashing wine, but from a trio of delightful young Hungarians just starting out on their journey to make wine organically in the Tokaji region. Just as good again - you must try it!
A few hours drive from the stunning city of Budapest is the world class wine region of Tokaji. Centuries old, and famed for its sweet and luscious wines (Aszú) which were served in the courts of Austro-Hungarian Empress Maria Theresa and Napoleon.
This volcanic region of rolling hills and pretty little villages is now very much focused on complementing sweet wines with zingy and complex dry white wines, especially using the local grape Furmint.
These dry wines have electric acidity, alongside rich stone fruit character and often are really texturally interesting. They are gaining popularity in international wine bars and wine-centric restaurants because they offer an exciting alternative to the classic white grape varieties. Paprika stuffed peppers with rice, pork and plenty of fresh herbs is a lovely Hungarian dish to have with a glass of Furmint.
