The Douro, home of Port for centuries, is filled with stunning 'Quinta' or wine-growing estates. In recent years, these top estates have been turning their expertise towards crafting delicious non-fortified wines. The historic Quinta da Pedra Alta is one such producer. A fruity yet structured and powerful red wine made from indigenous grapes: Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional. Generously, laden with bramble fruits, plum and plentiful soft tannins, all lifted by an impressive streak of freshness.

Breathtakingly beautiful, the Douro Valley is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, declared back in 1756. The landscape is filled with vines planted in zig zagging terraces alongside the deep blue river.
The region is divided into three territories. The Baixo (Low) Corgo which is nearest to Porto. Next comes the Cima Corgo, and the centre of many of the most prestigious and grand Quinta, especially near the pretty town of Pinhão (which is the perfect spot to pick up a river tour). The hot and dry Douro Superior is the final region, stretching all the way to the Spanish border.
Once known for Port, it’s a valley in transition, as excellent still, unfortified red and white wines from native varieties now compliment the famous fortified wines. With an increasing number of new boutique hotels, it’s fast becoming a wine tourism hotspot. While visiting, enjoy some local food, such as the regional classic oven-baked rice with baby goat. This is a must-see wine region.
