Domaine Begude 'Elegance' Chardonnay 2022

IGP Pays d'Oc

Fruity, Floral and Mineral

Organic and Suitable for Vegans

We’d had an eye on James Kinglake’s amazing organic Chardonnays for a while, and we were thrilled when we were able to add this to our stable. We have more again this year, and it’s a brilliant vintage, once again blending some of his rarer longer-aged barrels with his elegant yet fresher wine, to create the perfect balance.

+What it tastes like
A bright and taut, energetic style of Chardonnay, which rachets up the crystalline purity of the Limoux mountainside fruit, and adds just enough super-subtle oak. Delicious.
+What it goes with
Exceptional with shellfish and prawns (James is rather fond of his oysters), this will also accompany Sunday’s roast chicken with gusto.

Limoux is a small town and very well regarded appellation in the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees and 40 minutes drive from Carcassonne. Historically famous for its gently sparkling wines known as Blanquette de Limoux but these days revered for its chardonnay - offering a fantastic alternative to Burgundy.

White grapes are the main focus here, and Mauzac and Chenin Blanc are also planted in addition to Chardonnay. Although increasingly red wine is made here too with Pinot Noir and Merlot being common. The vineyards are at relatively high altitude and therefore cooler than much of the rest of Languedoc and it’s this that preserves the intensity and structure in the wines.

Limoux itself is a charming town filled with historic architecture on the Aude river. This is an area known for its rich food culture including the filling but really tasty Fricassée de Limoux, a pork dish served with white haricot beans.
