Biodynamic agriculture, Organic and Suitable for Vegans
Growing grapes organically in rainy Bordeaux takes special kinds of people, and father and son team Christophe and Gregoire Piat are the region’s leading practitioners. They craft dense, ultra-ripe, flavourful Merlot-based reds from bio-dynamically grown grapes and using as little sulphur as they can get away with.
Bordeaux is a behemoth, the largest wine producing region in France - making more wine than the whole of Australia. Home to many of the most prestigious producers in the planet of wine, making almost every style of wine under-the-sun, across all price points. This region has been the centre of the wine world for centuries, with some bumps along the way.
Situated on the Atlantic based around the rivers Dordogne and Garonne which join to form the Gironde estuary. This strategic position has been key to Bordeaux’s success for grape growing and for trade.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the flagship red varieties, along with Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc as the main grapes for white and sweet wines. Today, it’s a region in transition with many inspiring growers who are implementing more eco-friendly practices to make their wine. Away from the glitzy top names there are hundreds of small ,dedicated producers making excellent wines at more affordable prices - and these are exactly the wines we love. Visitors to the region won’t be disappointed: from the picture-perfect town of St Emilion to the La Cité du Vin, an interactive museum about wine, to the lively bars on the riverside in Bordeaux city.
